
What makes Uganda Unique?
Uganda, also known as the Pearl of Africa is indeed a favourite destination for 70% of tourists from all over the world. The country is located in the Eastern part of Africa, right at the equator. It has a rich nature and a wide range of wildlife including tree climbing Lions, Elephants, Leopards, Buffaloes, Hippopotamuses, Giraffes etc which are all found in their natural environments in national game parks like, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi impenetrable National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, Kibale National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Semliki Wildlife Reserve, Lake Mburo National Park etc.
The richness of the country with a variety of primate species explains why the majority of tourists love visiting Uganda. It has the highest density of mountain Gorillas and Chimpazees, as compared to other African countries. And for bird lovers, Uganda is a dream place. 1066 bird species are recorded to be existing in the country's nature.
In addition to the richness of its nature, Uganda is blessed with a rich culture which combines both native and foreign backgrounds. Music and dance from all tribes make the country rich and colourful in culture. With 50 tribes living side by side, Uganda has flourished with peace and stability for a long period of time. The country has managed to stabilise after the previous civil and political wars that filled the 20th century.

Despite its small size of 93,064 sq mi (241,037 sq km), Uganda retains 20% of its land for natural and wildlife reserves. Scarce animal species like the Rhinos, birds and rare plant species have found refuge in these reserves.
Different types of amazing activities do take place in the wildlife reserves. Individuals, families or organized groups can visit the reserves. However, to get the best out of a tour, it's advisable to get accompanied by tour guides because of their knowledge and experience in the reserves.

Let's take a look at Uganda's wildlife game reserves which also form the country's largest tourist attractions.

● AJAI WILDLIFE RESERVE
This reserve is located in Arua district in the North Western part of Uganda, at the West Banks of the Albert Nile. With grass plains, sparse savannah woodland and swamps, the reserve is a great haven for a variety of birds and animals. A wonderful place to enjoy nature walks and sightseeing.

● KARUMA WILDLIFE RESERVE
This reserve is neighboring Murchison Falls National Park in Western Uganda in Kiryandongo district. The reserve covers a total area of 317 sq miles. It's rich with a variety of animals like the Uganda Kobs, Giraffes, Elephants, Lions, the Black and White Monkeys, Leopards etc. If you enjoy birding, this reserve is a great destination. It's a home for special bird species like the Yellow-throated leafbird, Rock Pratincole, Swamp flycatcher, Giant kingfisher, Grey crowned cranes etc.

● KABWOYA WILDLIFE RESERVE
The location of Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve allows one to plan what is called hitting 3 birds with one stone. It's located along the Western Rift Valley and between Kabale National Park and. Murchison Falls National Park so if one plans to visit the 3 parks in one tour, it's definitly ideal. Fishing is the main activity at this reserve the fact that it's close to Lake Albert. The reserve is as well suitable for taking nature walks and birding is possible with 460 different bird species identified to exist in the reserve.

● BOKORA CORRIDOR WILDLIFE RESERVE
This reserve has a wonderful landscape covering an area of 2,056 sq kilometers in the North Eastern Uganda. It's located in Karamoja district. The reserve is best known for birding, hiking and taking nature walks. The Bokora people are well known for raring large herds of cattle so many tourists enjoy visiting these natives because of that.

● KATONGA WILDLIFE RESERVE
Just like its name, Katonga Wildlife Reserve is located at the banks of River Katonga. It's a home for a variety of animals including Elephants, Uganda Kobs, Antilopes etc. Hiking, Canoeing, nature walks and birding with 150 bird species are the favourable activities on this reserve.

● BUGUNGU WILDLIFE RESERVE
Bugungu Reserve covers 473 sq kilometers in the Western side of Uganda neighboring with Masindi and Balisa district. It's easy to combine a visit to Bugungu Reserve together with Murchison Falls National Park because they are neighbors. Birders can enjoy this reserve with 240 bird species recorded to be existing in its area. Among other animals, there are 600 Uganda Kobs living in the reserve. Nature walks and game driving are favourites in Bugungu Reserve. The natives living near the reserve are very hospitable and for those who enjoy interacting, this is a great destination.

● EAST MADI WILDLIFE RESERVE
Covering 831 sq kilometers, East Madi reserve is located in the North Western part of Uganda. It's a home for a variety of animals including the blue Monkeys, Colobus Monkeys and other mammals. The reserve is perfect for wildlife viewing, taking nature walks and of course birding as it's identified to be having 181 bird species.

● KYAMBURA WILDLIFE RESERVE
A great reserve located near the Kazinga channel and Queen Elizabeth National Park. A combination of these 3 attractions makes one's tour quite rich. Kyambura Wild life Reserve is the home of Chimpanzees so Chimpanzee trekking is the most ideal activity at the reserve. One can also take wonderful nature walks and it's known to have a variety of the most beautiful birds.

● KIGEZI WILDLIFE RESERVE
This 265 sq kilometer reserve in the Western part of Uganda is well known for having the largest herds of Elephants as they travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Queen Elizabeth National Park. For those that enjoy such a view, Kigezi Reserve is the place to be. Other animals like Bushbucks, Kobs, Buffaloes etc are present at the reserve. A wide range of beautiful bird species is to be enjoyed by the birder at Kigezi Wildlife Reserve.

● MATHENIKO WILDLIFE RESERVE
Matheniko Reserve is found in the North Eastern part of Uganda in Karamoja district. It's a great place to enjoy birding and animal viewing. The reserve has some of the most ancient rock paintings of 3000 years ago. It's a favourable place for taking nature walks as well.

● TORO-SEMILIKI WILDLIFE RESERVE
This wonderful reserve is located in the Western part of Uganda in the same region as Semiliki National Park. If you enjoy riding with a boat, this is the place to go. You can take a boat on Lake Albert and view some of the most beautiful water birds of the world. The reserve is identified to have over 400 bird species which makes it a perfect destination for birders.

● PIAN UPE WILDLIFE RESERVE
Pian Upe reserve is located in the North Eastern Uganda. It comes next to Murchison Falls National Park in size. Murchison Falls is the largest Wildlife Reserve in Uganda covering 3,893 sq kilometers (1,503 sq mi) Pian Upe covers 2,275 square kilometres. You can expect to find a wide range of animals at Pian Upe reserve like Cheetahs, Antilopes, Zebras, Waterbucks etc. You will also find Ostriches in Pian Upe. The reserve is as well suitable for birding because of the variety of bird species existing there. If you enjoy mountain climbing, this is the right place for you because of Mountain Kadam. It's as well a favourable place for taking nature walks.
